What are the benefits of having an insurance agent?
You’ll more likely need your insurance agent more than your actual insurance policy.
When shopping around for insurance, most people will wonder if they should contact a local agent or simply purchase their policy online.
We know we need insurance to both protect against damages caused by an accident, incident or simply because state law requires it (as is the case with auto insurance). But most people don’t understand industry regulations, types of insurance available, what they cover and deductibles available. That’s where an agent comes in, to walk you through what coverages you have vs. what you should have to make sure you are not underinsured or over insured.

Why do customers prefer having an agent?
It’s most likely that you will need your insurance agent more than your actual insurance policy. Your agent is there after an accident to help you maneuver how to set up a claim or let you know if what is the best thing to do at the time. (See article: Nothing like having a local agent at your disposal).
You’ll also talk to the same people at your local agent’s office, which helps when they know you and are aware of what’s going on. Compare to having to call a 1-800 center and getting a different person every time.
When making a claim, if the damages are lower than your deductible, it’s not worth putting in a claim since you will end up paying it out of pocket.
In the 20 years working in the insurance industry, I have found at least these 7 reasons why you should have a local agent:
- You want an expert that is licensed and appointed in your state to help you chose the best coverages for you and your family.
- A local agent will always have the most up-to-date information on your area and will be able to steer you the right way.
- Will be able to find you the best options available and go over cost vs. benefits.
- A local agent with experience will be able to save you time!
- Get personalized service. A local agent will get to know you and you will get to know them.
- Easy access to your agent via phone or email. No waiting on hold for company representatives.
- A local agent will keep you informed when there are any important changes to the policy which could impact your coverage.
That’s the least you should expect from your local insurance agent.
