Why is Boat Insurance important?

Every boatowner should have boat insurance, as they are just as exposed as autos which makes it so important to get it covered.

In addition to covering your boat against collision with other boats, you should also consider possible damage due to fire, theft, and vandalism.  This is particularly the case during the winter, when the boats are stored and have minimal use.

There are some policies that will not cover jet ski.  You’ll want to call your agent and find out if coverage for your jet ski is available in your area.

Is Boat Insurance required in Texas?

You are not required by law to purchase boat insurance. There are only a few states that require boatowners to have boat insurance such as Arkansas, Hawaii, and Utah.

There’re only 4 states that require a boat license to drive a boat. These states are Alabama, Delaware, Georgia and Mississippi.

In Texas you only need a driver’s license to drive a boat if the boat has 15 HP or are larger than 14ft and for those born on or after September 1, 1993.  The same applies to Jet ski.  If born on or after September 1, 1993, you will also need to take a boating course.

If you live in Texas, I strongly recommend purchasing a boat policy since the USCG- United States Coast Guard reported in 2017, 170 boat accidents in Texas that resulted in damages of $1.4 million dollars.

Yet another reason to purchase boat insurance even if it’s not required by the state of Texas.

What Coverages should your Boat Insurance Have?

According to the Insurance Information Institute, your insurance should cover:

• Liability
• Medical Payments
• Theft

Most boat insurance policies offer coverages ‘a la carte’ and you can pick and choose additional coverages.  As you already know, “Full Coverage” is a myth (see article: The Myth that is “Full Coverage”).

Coverages in policies can sometimes be limited. Be sure you speak to your agent and find out exactly what is and what is not covered on your policy and of course to maximize all your discounts.
